Austin, with a chance of Rain

Oh the rain sure got the best of me while I was in Austin this past week! I had to reschedule most of my sessions. Ugh! Luckily, I have AMAZING clients who are flexible and willing to work with me when the weather doesn't cooperate. I squeezed everyone in on the one "mostly" sunny day and flew home with 11 sessions to edit. Wooo-eee! ALL of them are wicked-awesome (such a good word) and I cannot wait to get them to you, my beloved Texans.

I'll be doing plenty of sneak peeks this week so keep checking back for some Texas goodness.

Dear baby Kimball is brother to FOUR older sisters. Mom calls him a "bonus baby" as his arrival was a bit of a surprise. Oh how she cherishes him! Watching them interact was so special for me. He knew when she was near. He responded in the neatest way. Every newborn is different and I'm always amazed at how precious each baby is that I photograph. I wish I could bottle up his sweetness.

Being creative makes me happy.

Beyond happy.

I've made some resolutions to be more creative with my editing and push myself to shoot for fun more often. It's challenging to depart from my standard style, but it's so worth it.

I had a shoot with two of my favorite people tonight. (Angie and Jess)

Our gorgeous models were AMAZING! They put up with our craziness and the chilly weather. I could have photographed them all night, but we were all a little frozen.

I had the opportunity to see Katie in action. She paints. She draws. She colors and gets paid for it! Her creations are so fun. I want to cover Oliver’s walls with her work. I’ve actually commissioned her to create a big huge canvas for his new room…a pirate ship! I can’t wait.

Katie describes her style as “Cartoonish, child-like, silly, playful.”

I just call it awesome. Really… Her work is fresh and fun and unique.

She’s been painting, drawing and creating since she was a little girl but only recently started her business. She’s inspired by her little boy, Noah and she rocks at being his Mama while still making time to create beautiful things for you and me. Her husband, Abe, is her biggest supporter and they make a great team. (Abe helps out with the techie stuff and even dresses up in a cheerleading outfit while Katie paints…”GO KATIE GO!” Okay, this is a lie. But he’s her cheerleader all the same.)

She pours so much love into each painting. Even her packaging is perfection. She ships super fast too! She puts so much time and effort into making sure her customers are happy.

I asked Katie to offer some advice to women who are thinking about starting a business…here’s what she had to say:

1. How do you manage work and home? How do you create balance?
Right now I can only paint and draw when Noah is napping or down for the night (too hard to keep him out of the paint!). When he’s awake is when I fill and package orders. Otherwise, my husband does a lot of the bookkeeping and technical stuff for me when he has a spare moment here and there.

2. What would you say to other women who are thinking of starting a business/side business/business at home?
Go for it! Make sure it’s something you enjoy doing, get organized and realize that it can be very time consuming. And… it will probably get spread all over your house if you’re chasing kids around too. But it can be very rewarding.

3. What mistakes have you made or what would you do differently if you could do it all over again when you first started your business?
Maybe just a little more prep and research before launching the business. I could have saved a lot of time and money if I’d researched more.

4. What advice would you give to women who want to work and be wives and mothers?
I’ll say it again…. Get organized! Get organized! Create a work area and create a schedule. Make sure you have time that is for work and time that is for kids. Don’t short your kids’ time with you or it’s not worth it. On the other side of that, don’t short your “self time” or it’s not worth it either. Be flexible! Kids force that necessity upon us. And most importantly, a happy mom is the best kind of mom! So whatever you decide to do, make sure that your happiness and well-being is your priority and everything else will fall into place.

Meet Irelynd.

You have NEVER met anyone like her.

I know I haven't. {Though, my son could possibly be her twin in looks and personality but he's only three...so it doesn't count.}

She is absolutely full of it.

IT = everything that is awesome.

I had a mentoring session today, and Irelynd was our model. I have never met her before and her mama was nice enough to bring her up to my studio.

I've never laughed so hard during a session. She is witty, clever, sneaky, smart, funny, outgoing, spazzy, and a natural in front of the camera. This girl can go from serious to hilarious with a snap of my finger. Every pose was hers. I could barely keep up with her! What a dream to photograph! I am still cracking up about her. I begged her to be my friend and to hang out with me. She said yes and I'm counting down the days till we can hang out again. Oh how I love that Irelynd. A whole lot.

The first time I met Olivia I couldn't get over her. When I saw her again today, a year later, it happened all over again. She is so full of personality. I wanted so badly to kiss on her cheeks and take her home with me. How can I remain professional when there is this kind of cuteness lurking about?! Sheesh.

It's been 7 months since Brian passed away. New baby Bella is here, sweet little Ava is as beautiful as ever, and mama Anna is quite possibly the bravest woman I know.

Today they sent balloons off to daddy. It was special for me to photograph such a tender moment. I couldn't help but tear up behind my camera as I watched them blow kisses to the sky.

What a whirlwind the last few months have been! I'm home and trying to pick up the pieces, but feeling a little bit scattered. I'm not sure what to do, where to go, how to be. It's a weird feeling. We experienced so many amazing moments on our journey. Being home feels a bit awkward right now. I'm anxious to get back to work, and back to a normal schedule. Little Oliver is too! The poor kid has been in the naughty corner too many times the past couple days! :)

I can't really put into words how incredibly lucky I feel to have been able to do this. And it's not over. We're totally committed to finishing our trip. We are, however, going to pause for a minute and gather ourselves before we head out again. I need a break from living out of a suitcase. I guess it's true, what they say, that one usually finds that what they've been looking for was there all along! What I have found is that while I love adventure, I love "boring" just as much. So for the next month or so, we are going to try "boring" on for size and then set out again to conquer the rest of this country.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. YOU…my clients, my friends…are a huge reason this trip was possible. I am beyond blessed to have such an incredible job. I can’t even call it a job. I am so looking forward to 2010. It’s going to be a fantastic year. I have such fun things in the works and can’t wait to share them with you all. Watch for some goodies coming your way very soon. This is the year I give back in a big way. You’re going to want in on this, so stay tuned my pretties.

Consider the buffalo

I'm sitting in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the gorgeous, rolling hills of Nebraska. We are approaching South Dakota. Have we really been gone 3 weeks? 12 states! Wow. And there is still so much more to see.

The demon that posessed Oliver's little body has left. Alex is happily working his way through the last of the sunflower seeds. (Is it odd to find his spitting the shells out attractive?) Everything is right again. The funk is gone. Well done, everyone, making us laugh. It definitely helped.

I'm feeling warm and fuzzy this morning. (Note to self: it's time to shave your legs again.) My heart fills full. I read c-janes blog (who doesn't?) this morning and took her advice. I stood with Oliver in the middle of our "home" and we danced ourselves silly. I feel lucky to love and be loved today. Oliver and I have really bonded on this trip. I wish that I could replay every moment we've shared in the past three weeks. I've laughed and cried so much over how much I adore him. He forces me to live in the moment, to slow down, to play.

Case in point...
Wyoming is huge. Rather, it felt huge. Sort of like we would never be able to drive far enough to leave it. Along the way, we saw herds of antelope grazing quite close to the highway. The first herd we saw was special. Special enough to pull over and take pictures of. The second herd was almost as special as the first. The third and fourth, well, we just pointed at those. After that I started to not even notice them. They blended in with the scenery and the dozens of cow herds. Hours went by. Ollie came up front and sat on my lap (to snuggle and break the law, yes.) He started pointing at the antelope with grand excitement. He also pointed at the cows with as much enthusiasm as he had when we saw the first herd of antelope.

I heard myself say, "those are just cows honey."

He said, "No! Look!"

I looked.

He was right. There in the field was a huge herd of buffalo! I had become an antelope snob, a mama who ignored cows. Was I already beginning to take this adventure for granted? Shame on me.

My sweet Ollie opens my eyes. He reminds me to SEE the buffalo. I feel a new excitement this morning. I mean c'mon, I'll be standing in front of Mt Rushmore in less than an hour. I can't wait to see it. And all the cows along the way.

All Play and no Work

My job isn't work with these two lovies. They belong to my friend Tiffani. We have parked our RV in their driveway for a few days while we get ready to start another leg of our trip. I was so happy to get to photograph these cute boys again. I know, I know..I said I wasn't shooting while I was gone. Yep, I'm a big fat liar liar-pants.

And they are big fat cutie cutie-pants.

This is not the official announcement I had hoped to give....

I'm not dead.

I left on my trip without saying goodbye! So sorry! The weeks leading up to our trip were INSANE! I still haven't recovered.

To sum up....

We've gone to see ALL 50 STATES!

I've been blogging about our adventure (HERE) when I've been able to find an internet connection. I have been away from email for over a week and it's driving me nuts! I can do a few things from my phone and sometimes we can get cell service. It's been super frustrating. If you've tried to reach me, please email me or call me again. I know there are emails I'm not getting and calls that aren't coming though.

We are in Alaska now, and will be in Seattle on Thursday. I'm hoping I will have internet and phone then. It's funny how disconnected I feel without this stuff.

Anyway, it's tricky to blog right now. I will spew out all the details of where I am and what the heck I'm doing when I can find a better connection.

Hopefully I haven't lost all of you. Still there? :)

Sweet to be Two

I've been photographing Ashton (and his sister) since he was born. Last night with this little dude was so fun. Two is always such a tricky age to shoot...but this kid is a piece of cake. I love when I've photographed a kiddo for a while and they get comfortable with me. That's why having a family photographer is such a good idea!

Remember this? A CHRISTMAS GIFT

It finally happened! I chose this amazing woman, Leslie, and her sweet son, Aaron. Her story...well, it broke my heart. Leslie's husband passed away unexpectedly and I as so touched by her courage and strength. Meeting her was amazing. She is beyond lovely. And that boy of hers....whoa! He's so charming.

We kept putting the shoot off, waiting for perfect weather etc. Here's a tiny peek of the goodies we got.

This is Brian Cardall. He is related to my family through marriage. Brian was tragically and unexpectedly killed this week. He leaves behind his wife, Anna and their two year old child. Anna is 6 months pregnant.

I'm sure none of us can even begin to imagine what life will now be like for Anna and these two sweet children who have lost their father. In moments like this, we wonder what we can do. Words fail us, yet we try to speak words of comfort. Our arms are heavy with responsibilities, yet we reach them out a little further to hug or hold on, that we may comfort.

There is memorial fund for Anna and Ava and the baby that is coming. This is another way we can try to help. Please donate by contacting either Wells Fargo or Mountain America Credit Union; the fund is called The Brian Cardall Memorial Fund.

Even $1, $5, or $10 will make a difference. It doesn't bring Brian back, but it is a way that we can reach out to offer our compassion and our condolence.

It was great to reconnect with Stace again. (I used to live in St George and we were buds.) She came up for a session and I had such a great time with her and her sweet family.

Stace reminds me of Snow White....perfectly porcelain skin, beautiful black hair. Her little girl reminds me so much of Oliver and I loved discovering that I'm not the only mom with a spirited child! Here is a peek of my faves.

I spent a lovely afternoon with Carly chatting photography. Our models...er, GORGEOUS models showed up and we had a blast shooting and hanging out with them. I love cool people. I think I'm going to get a t-shirt that says that...with THESE faces all over it. Tyson and Julie are as cool and beautiful as they come and it was my pleasure photographing them. Thanks guys! Hi there. Is it fall? It feels like fall. My schedule during the fall last year was completely insane and I'm feeling some really similar insanity. Uh oh. My office will be closed tomorrow, April 10th, because I have a very important birthday to celebrate. My sweet Oliver is turning THREE! We have big plans....most of them include playing with play-doh ALL day. :)

Oliver, you are my favorite person on the planet. No one makes me laugh like you do. I love you more than you can possibly imagine. You and I are so much alike and sometimes we butt heads in a big way. Oh how I love you for your fiesty, sassy ways. You have so much personality and everyone that meets you falls instantly in love with you. You are a gentle soul...an old soul. You have changed my life in every possible way. Old friends...New Friends

My clients are my friends. I like to think so at least. Lately I've had phone conversations with my "clients" and I hang up thinking, "For real. I love these people." Once or twice a year I get a crazy client (you know who you are) that sends me into tears, or makes me want to quit my job...but 9 times out of 10 the people I work with/for make me the happiest person alive.

So my trip to Vegas was a little less than wonderful. The sessions went great and I had a fabulous time working...but when work was over it was time to be sick. I got a nasty case of food poisoning and spent the last half of my trip in bed. While I was throwing my guts up, my sweet friend Sarah took such great care of me. I got to take some shots of her when I first arrived in Vegas. (see below)

Sarah, you are so dear to me. Thank you for holding my hair and rubbing my back. You went above and beyond and I can't thank you enough for loving me sa' good. :) Also this: YOU'RE HOT!

The first thing I said to Aiden's parents today was, "That is not the same kid I photographed 6 months ago!" How time flies when you're not the mama. I always feel this way when I see a newborn I've photographed grow so big so fast. Aiden was a beautiful newborn and here he is 6 months later....still a completely gorgeous little boy. Ahhh, so hard to be me these days. :)
